Assignment

  1.  CHOOSE ONE BULLET BELOW AND SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS
  • As you read the blogs in Activity 1, you may have noticed that the line between professional ideas and personal opinions became blurred. How do you think this kind of transparency affects the school community?
  • Were you more drawn to those posts with personal reflections or did you prefer to read blogs in which the author focused on the issues important to school leaders?
  • What are your initial thoughts about the type of blog you would want to maintain? How would this type of blog meet your administrative needs?
*I would prefer to use a blog to showcase timely articles, videos and sites that enhance our current school focus (thematic teaching using science and social studies to teach math and language arts) or to provide resources for highlighting careers that students may identify with as they learn about math, science, language arts and social studies.

  1. Hello! I am a little overwhelmed with Twitter and Blogging this week. I am excited to learn more about these Web 2.0 tools. I know I am so far behind. However, my new Twitter account is @tconner22269. As far as the bulleted points I am adding my thoughts about being drawn to posts with personal reflections and important issues. I am a reflective thinker so personal reflection is essential for me to grow. However, I usually reflect on the important school issues along with daily issues.

    1. I have enjoyed reading the blogs although, I have been having some computer issues this week that have slowed me down just a bit. I can see how this form of communication could be useful in the work environment, but there would need to be maybe certain guidelines. I know our youth pastor, who is expecting his first child, told us last Sunday that he made the mistake of asking people on his blog what they thought about a certain pediatric clinic in our area. He said there were all kinds of very critical reviews and opinions. He commented that if he had his time to do over, he would have put more thought into what he had asked his followers to comment.

  2. Let me start by saying that I am way out of my comfort zone. I believe personal opinions take the focus off of what should be done for the betterment of the school/community and puts it on the individual.

  3. I enjoyed reading the blogs (and actually followed some links to other blogs and spent way more time than I had intended!). I guess I'm straddling the fence on this. I liked both types of posts for different reasons: the news/issues blogs were informative and would keep me current with what's happening, and the more personal blogs helped me understand the "heart" of the bloggers more and gave me much food for thought.

A personal blog with your view/opinion may allow others to feel like they know you better. I was more drawn to the blogs with personal reflection because I felt like I could connect with what was being expressed. I would want my own blog to be positive with maybe a little bit of opinion, but more about information and helpful references.

  5. My twitter account is lpope1966. I enjoyed all of the blogs and felt they were very informative. I think it is very helpful to share ideas with other administrators in hopes that I could become a better administrator myself. I did a little blogging in another class but I feel that sometimes social media can be a little too much gossip for me so I don't always use it. But I do feel that if it is kept very professional and is used to improve yourself in a professional way then it would be useful tool. I would probably keep my blog professional and use it more to share tips and tools of the trade.

  6. I have considered before joining Twitter, but to be honest I was nervous about it. I am all for learning new things in technology but it can be scary. I feel like "what if I mess something up" or "what if I do not do it right". I have to say that my confidence is lacking when it comes to this. The only way to learn and get over is to do it and use it. I am going to set up a Twitter account for my school (my principal gave me permission to do so).

    1. Don't forget you can delete blogs and twitter as soon as we are done with the class.
Your principal can tweet all about his/her walkabouts!

  7. I enjoyed reading the different blogs. I started a blog in another class but have not used it because I had a class website already set up. I can see from these blogs ways to improve my blog and how it would be beneficial. My blog is Gail Countryman's Blog at http://gcountryman.blogspot.com/
I do not have a twitter account yet. I was not so sure if I wanted to do that or not when I see my children and grandchildren so consumed by Twitter. I thought I had already posted on this blog but may not have done it correctly. I have a lot to learn!

  10. •Were you more drawn to those posts with personal reflections or did you prefer to read blogs in which the author focused on the issues important to school leaders?

As I thought about this question, I would truthfully say a little bit of both. If I were searching for information on topics to address current issues at my school, I would prefer to read blogs in which the author was more focused on important issues for school administrators. With that said, I think that blogs with personal reflections on how school administrators handled issues at their schools could help me to know how effective using their strategies could possibly be at my school. At least, it would give me some insight into the outcomes of implementing the strategies. As I read some of the blogs, I found myself spending too much time on them.

In another eLearning course that I took, I had to set up both a Twitter account and a blog. I was not real happy about that. When I signed up for the course, I did not realize that this would be required. It would have been nice to know that ahead of time. Since that course ended, I have not done anything with either of them. If I were not retired, I would probably find a way to incorporate them into my professional life. I do see that they could be very beneficial to administrators on so many levels in their daily routines.
